The Latin American Network of Interdisciplinary Studies and Research in Defense (RLAID) brings together a group of scholars, researchers, students, and volunteers focused on studying, researching, producing knowledge, and engaging in defense-related issues. Composed of civilian and military researchers, the studies produced are based on theoretical, applied, and impactful research, with the goal of fostering interdisciplinary studies and research on defense issues and the military field in Latin America.

Sabrina Celestino (Coordinator)

I’m Sabrina Celestino, veteran officer of Brazilian Army. I Social Work degree by Federal Fluminense University, master’s degree in social work by State University of Rio de Janeiro, and a PhD in Social Work by Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. Currently, I'm pursuing a post-doctorate in the Department of Psychology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, studying the relationship between personality and physical exercise. I'm civilian professor and researcher in Brazilian Army Research Institute of Physical Fitness. I’m a researcher of the research group Human Dimension of Defense Studies, of the Research Laboratory on Security, Development and Defense (LAB-SDD), of the Higher School of Defense (ESD) and the researcher of research group on Humanitarian Issues and Aerospace Power (GPHumAer) of the Brazilian Air Force University. I conduct research about humanities in military sciences including human dimension in Armed Forces, public policy, social protection, gender, peace mission, life, career, and military identity, military family, mental health and quality of life.

Fábio Facchinetti Freire

My name is Fábio Facchinetti Freire. I am a veteran officer from Brazilian Army, graduated from the Agulhas Negras Military Academy (1988). I dedicated the entire second half of my career to military education, specifically the Brazilian Military High School System (SCMB, 2000–2016). I hold a Master's degree in Education from the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO, 2007) and a PhD in Social Sciences from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio, 2017), with research in Sociology of Education, focusing on the training of young Brazilians by the Army in Military High School especially with military children of military personnel. Based on postdoctoral research at Salgado de Oliveira University (UNIVERSO, 2022) on the recent history of military training, I expanded the scope of my investigations to understand the military ethos in its socio-anthropological dimension: the composition of "being military," in its specificities and, especially, in the prohibitions through which the ethos becomes exclusive, because it is opposed to the society that contains it. These are cultural distinctions, in a broad sense. I am interested in how this ethos is maintained and reproduced. Given, then, an intentionality in this process of subjectivation (more or less overt, non-reflective, and never negotiated with civil society), I recognize that it follows a pedagogy. I am therefore interested in verifying, ultimately, if, when, and how this pedagogy engages with those who are not military personnel.

Nádia Xavier Moreira

I hold a postdoctoral qualification in Social Anthropology from the National Museum of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), and a PhD in Social Work in the same institution. I am currently pursuing a PhD in Social Anthropology at Brasilia University (UnB). I also hold a master’s degree in social work in the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-RJ), and a bachelor’s degree in social work in the State University of Ceará (UECE). I’m a senior officer in Brazilian Navy, with the rank of Navy Captain. I am a lecturer in Higher School of Defense (ESD), as a professor in a Postgraduate Program in Security, Development and Defense. I also contribute to the Advanced Studies in Defense course (CAED), the Interagency Coordination and Planning course (CCOPI), and the Strategic Logistics and Defense course (CLED). I coordinate the research strand “The Human Dimension of Defense Studies” at the Laboratory for Security, Development and Defense (LAB-SDD) at ESD. I am also a researcher at the Laboratory of Studies on Economies and Globalization (LEEG), part of the Department of Anthropology at the Brasília University. My academic and professional trajectory lies at the intersection of Anthropology and Social Work, with a particular focus on ethnology, culture, and gender, especially in relation to military and Indigenous people cultural contexts.

Viviane Machado Caminha

PhD in History of Sciences, Techniques and Epistemology (HCTE) from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro - UFRJ (2017), master’s in social history from the State University of Rio de Janeiro - Faculty of Teacher Training, UERJ-FFP (2010) and a degree in History, BA and full degree, from the Fluminense Federal University - UFF (2007). Member of the National History Association (ANPUH) and the Brazilian Defense Studies Association (ABED). Leader of the research group Human Dimension of Defense Studies, of the Research Laboratory on Security, Development and Defense (LAB-SDD), of the Higher School of Defense (ESD) and of the research group Curriculum and Formative Process: innovation and interdisciplinarity, of the Faculty of Education, of Brasília University (UnB). I am currently an Adjunct Professor at the Higher Defense School (ESD), a lecturer in the Postgraduate Program in Security, Development and Defense (PPGSDD) at the Higher Defense School (ESD) and a collaborating lecturer in the Postgraduate Program in History (PPG History) at the Salgado de Oliveira University (UNIVERSO). Conducts research on the following topics: 1. Society and Defense, with a focus on Military Family and Diversity Management in the Armed Forces (gender, people with disabilities and other minority categories); 2. Defense Culture and Mentality, with a focus on Defense Teaching and Defense Culture; and 3. New Military History (Colonial Brazil).

Carlos Roberto Carvalho Daróz

I’m Carlos Daroz, PhD in History at Federal Fluminense University and the Université Libre de Bruxelles. I work as a researcher at the Brazilian Army's Center for Military History Studies and Research, and as a postgraduate lecturer in Military History at the Salgado de Oliveira University. I am a member of the Military History research group at the University of Lisbon and the First World War Studies Center at Brasilia University. I research studies on the First World War, military aviation, women's participation in wars and conflicts, and institutional history.

Michela de Souza Cotian

I am a psychologist and a civilian professional of Brazilian Army, currently working at the Army Applied Psychology Center (CPAEx). I hold a Master’s degree in Psychiatry and Mental Health from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and I am currently a PhD student in the Clinical Psychology graduate program at PUC-Rio (Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro). I have extensive professional experience in clinical, health, and sport psychology, as well as in psychological assessment and research within military and institutional settings. My research interests include psychological assessment, personality, resilience, and adaptation to stress in performance-oriented contexts.
